Poikkal Dance

pongalfest poikkal dance

Also called the Dummy Horse Dance, this is a popular dance-form in Tamil Nadu. Dancers wear the costume of a Dummy Horse and dance around the stage, using the beat of the horse’s hooves to provide the bass line for the music. Usually performed at temple worships, our guests will have the opportunity to witness this elaborate and hard dance live at Pongal Fest. The dance form is 2000 years old, with costumes made of cardboard, paper, and sometimes even glass. To mimic the horse hoof sound, dancers wear wooden shoes. It is a colorful and ritualistic dance.
